4 Simple Tips To Design An Organic Modern Living Room
Published on January 30th 2023 – Author Lenard Arceo
Organic modern has been the talk of the town over the past few months.
So naturally, a person who wants to enhance their room’s aesthetics would take an interest. However, since it’s a relatively new trend, at least compared to other designs, it can be challenging to pull off.
You may not even know what this design concept entails, so let’s start by going over what it is.
What Is Organic Modern?
Though it is by no means a new or innovative idea, organic design—a design concept inspired by nature, has become prominent over the years. Perhaps it’s because a lot of people wanted to deeply connect themselves to nature during the pandemic. Regardless, it’s a fact that it’s now incredibly popular.
It found its way into other design concepts as well. Modern minimalism—a design concept that emphasizes function over form, is one such style that has come to adapt elements of the organic/natural style.
That’s how the organic modern style came to be.
At its root, it’s a blend of organic design and modern minimalism. That is to say, it mixes organic elements and nature with minimalist features like clean lines, functional furniture, and sculptural forms. It’s simple on paper, but difficult to execute, so here are four organic modern living room tips to help you out.
1. Set Neutral Colors As Your Color Scheme
One of the first steps when you want to renovate a room, is to decide on a color scheme.
This scheme would influence what decor you need to get and what materials you need to use. Interestingly, the organic style, as well as the modern minimalistic design concept, has similar color schemes.
To be precise, the organic design style features neutral colors, while the modern minimalistic style mostly uses black, white, and brown colors. Therefore, it makes sense to go for neutral colors if you want to create an organic modern living room. For your reference, neutral colors are those that lack intensity.
Examples of neutral colors include:
- Black
- White
- Gray
- Cream
- Tan
- Beige
- Ivory
2. Only Go for Products Made of Natural Materials
A natural material, by definition, is any product that comes from animals, plants, or the ground. And as one might expect from the organic design style, it mainly features decor that is made of such materials.

Examples of these natural materials include:
- Natural fiber (e.g., jute, hemp, linen, moss, silk, wool)
- Composites (e.g., plasticine, clay)
- Native metals and minerals (e.g., silver, iron, gold, copper)
- Stone (e.g., gems, sand, granite, sandstone, glass)
- Wood
If you want to enhance the organic modern aesthetics of your living room, make sure you only go for products made of these materials. However, make sure you ease up on purchasing pieces of furniture.
3. Don’t Go on a Shopping Spree
Normally, going on a shopping spree while you’re planning to design or renovate a living room is completely fine, but that’s not the case with any form of minimalism. That also goes for organic modern.
A shopping spree would imply that you bought a lot of things, which goes against modern minimalism, which is characterized by minimal decor. Perhaps that’s why organic modern is a popular design concept among homeowners—it encourages you to stay on a budget. Needless to say, make sure you ease up on your furniture or decor shopping if you want to maintain the minimalistic part of organic modern.
4. Look for Decor Featuring Curves and Arches
It was fortunate that organic and modern minimalism, the two components of organic modern, use a similar color scheme. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said when it comes to their “shape” scheme.
The organic design concept incorporates natural forms and shapes that you would often find in nature.
It would feature irregular and asymmetric shapes, for instance, since that’s how most natural elements like rocks or trees are shaped. The organic design style may also incorporate curves and arches.
On the other hand, modern minimalism incorporates geometric shapes that are usually symmetric, such as squares, circles, and triangles. In other words, the “shape scheme,” as we’d like to call it, of each style are at odds. However, that doesn’t mean you cannot blend the two styles in terms of their shapes.
You can find a balance between natural shapes and geometric shapes through curves and arches.
That’s because curves and arches, while associated with man-made shapes, are present in nature, like the curves of a tidal wave, the shape of a leaf, or the curves of a fruit. At the same time, curves and arches feature clean and sleek lines, which is prominent in modern minimalism. Put simply, incorporating curves and arches is an excellent way to find a balance between organic and modern minimalistic shapes.
Parting Words
Designing a room while following a design concept is hard enough as it is. So it makes sense that you’d have difficulty designing an organic modern living room, considering how it blends the two design concepts, organic and modern minimalism.
